The question of what to do next comes up multiple times when running your own business. Whether you are a small business owner or artist, chances are you have had to pivot more times than you care to count. As new technology comes on the market coupled with an ever evolving consumer base, you are always trying to figure out what to work on next. At the core of your business is what you are selling, but making time for all the other things is cumbersome and may be exhausting.
As an Indie author, keeping up with social media, creating new content, and attempting to reach my readers feels like floating in the ocean. I'm moving, but it may be in a circle where I end up back where I started. My family has lived through some really tough times these last couple of years. My salt & pepper haired followers will understand when I vent about my parents never explaining that wisdom comes from loss. It's difficult to reach my age and not have experienced loss of some kind. Loss of a loved one, a job, a marriage, or even your health. Maybe you've lost friendships, or lost touch with people or places that you never imagined living without. Of course we all learn to adapt, to overcome. For the record, time does heal some of those wounds. The wisdom comes from having gone through it, the scars evidence of the harrowing journey.
As many of you know my husband, Alan, is on this writing journey with me. He helps with social media, travels with me to shows, shoots the videos and takes most of the photos. As we come back from this brief rest bit, we're both asking, what do we do now? Getting back into writing is one thing, all the others things that go along with it is something else altogether.
During those really tough days, when my creative well is a bit low, and I'm fighting for every word on the page, I try and take a moment to remember why I fell in love with writing in the first place. Sometimes I take a walk, call a friend, or watch a funny video. I started paying attention to what inspires me so I know where to return to when my inspiration meter is running low.
Most understand that no one said it would be easy. The writing journey can be fraught with obstacles. Through every part of this journey, there is a lesson, if I care to look for it. I remind myself to enjoy the ride. The what is not as important as the why. I'm on the adventure of a lifetime and I am able to share it with someone I love and trust! Hopefully, you are too.
